Our friends Brett and Sarah recently had a baby and I was busting to meet her. My immune system, however, had other ideas and decided to deal me a large helping of Evil Flu. Continue reading
Orange and blueberry cake with rum syrup
6 SepThis post is a mash-up of two recipes from books currently sitting on my bench. Like many people reading cookbooks – specifically, baking books that consist mostly of sweet bakes, rather than bread – is my Thing. Continue reading

Boozy strawberry trifle for one
1 SepSpring has sprung! At least, it has in the southern hemisphere and today, the first day of Spring, the skies were blue, the wattle was out and all was right in the world.

Chai bundt cake from scratch
30 AugOn a recent child-free weekend in Sydney the Hungry Dad and I explored the stunningly elegant Stand Arcade. We found the amazing Gewürzhaus, a teeny shop crammed with herbs, spices, salts and teas from all around the world.
After sampling some lovely mulled wine as we perused the boutique we ended up leaving with a heavy bag and lighter wallet. Donna Hay black forest cake
19 AugThe Hungry Dad is a huge fan of black forest cake and it recently occurred to me that I had yet to make it for him.
We were headed out on a picnic with some friends and I decided to bake this cake. Let me interrupt myself here by saying that picnics for me are heaven, while The Hungry Dad treats them as something along the lines of purgatory. All that eating in the fresh air – pah, says he.
So this cake was a peace offering / bribe to encourage him to enjoy the day. And a good time was had by all. Hooray! Continue reading
Chocolate cupcakes with a salted caramel centre
15 AugTo mangle a quote from Mark Twain, the reports of the death of cupcakes has been greatly exaggerated. The trendy kids and the foodies looking for the hot new thing may ignore cupcakes but I’m here to tell you that whenever I take a plate of cupcakes anywhere people fall over themselves to get one. Often it is the adults pushing the kids out of the way, which probably says more about the company I keep but the fact remains that cupcakes are a popular item. Continue reading
