Donna Hay honey cake recipe

Sometimes you want an easy-to-throw together cake that isn’t vanilla or chocolate. Sometimes you have a pantry full of honey as every time you’re at a fair or farmers market and you see another variety of honey you just can’t help yourself and end up buying yet another jar. Sometimes you just want to watch the hypnotic sensation of honey oozing from a spoon and falling lushly into a bowl of cake batter. Or maybe that’s just me. IMG_0170

Either way, this cake is your go to. There is no cake you can buy or make from a packet that tastes like this, with its golden sunshiny taste of honey. Bees, huh? Just amazing.


1¾ cups self-raising flour, sifted

¾ cup caster sugar

½ cup honey

155g butter, melted

3 eggs, lightly beaten

¾ cup Greek yogurt



Preheat oven to 180C and thoroughly grease a 25cm ring pan – make sure you pay special attention to the inner ring so the cake won’t stick.

Whisk the flour and sugar together with a fork in a bowl and set aside.

In bowl of electric mixer beat butter, honey, eggs and yogurt until light and combined. Fold in flour/sugar mix and use a silver spoon to stir until just combined.

Scrape into prepared pan and bake for 26-30 minutes / until a skewer comes out clean.

Set aside for 10 minutes before turning on to a cooling rack.

    Perfect post! I have a lovely Honey Cake I make from an old recipe of my Mother in Law’s, however as it is for one of our Jewish Festivals it is quite heavy and rich. Your recipe is wonderful and will take to the bench for afternoon tea today…x

    I’m like you with an overabundance of honey. Latest find is a Turkish Rose honey from Trader Joe’s. Certainly don’t need anymore, but never think twice about buying another variety if it looks intriguing. What fun to have a honey cake recipe–thanks!

      • It’s really lovely HM! Such a moist and beautifully flavoured, tender cake! My ring pan is quite a shallow one (thinking I might need to invest in a larger, prettier one…), so I made half a dozen cupcakes as well with the leftover mixture. All of the cupcakes have disappeared already and I’m sure we’ll make a good dent in the cake after dinner tonight! Thanks again for sharing this recipe. 🙂
