Donna Hay sprinkle whoopie pies – perfect for children’s parties

Play dates require planning and commitment and nerves of steel. Yes, it should just be fun and easy but in my experience it is having a famished flock of children descend upon the kitchen every 15 minutes with wails of ‘we’re huuuunnngry’.

The playing takes second place to the feeding and a child who has just finished lunch will be able to put away enough food to put a sumo wrestler to shame.

With this in mind I made chocolate whoopie pies in anticipation of a double play recently. Yes, a food to keep even four little girls satiated for more than 5 minutes needed to be portable. To be sugar-filled. And most importantly, to be pretty – dousing a cake in colourful sprinkles will have that effect. Continue reading

Donna Hay salted caramel brownies

23 Feb

saltedCarBrown1

So simple. So quick. So very moreish and delicious. This bake ticks all the boxes and then some. I know the hip kids moved on from salted caramel a while ago (overkill and all that) but in my world whenever I present salted caramel anything the reaction is always the same – people falling over themselves to ensure they don’t miss out. Toffee apple cake

Apples, eh? Something that looks shiny and crisp at the markets can turn out to be a fraud when bitten into. Soft. Floury. Bruised. That was our experience after being swindled at a farmer’s market recently. Before I continue let me say that I adore farmer’s markets and the farmers that produce our food. I have no idea how fraudulent apple man managed to get a stand at these popular markets but he did. Money was exchanged. Apples were bought. Disappointment on one side of this transaction ensued.

So there we were – a fruit bowl full of dud apples that Misses 7 and 9 kept boomeranging back from school each day.

If you are a follower of this blog or know me in the real world you would know that my instant reaction was to turn these fraudulent apples into a cake. Continue reading

Have you seen the Great British Bake Off? I love it! An Australian version was short-lived but to be honest the British version really appealed to me. I love learning about the history of cakes and tarts – as a history and all-things-British nerd I find the back-story of the bakes fascinating. Continue reading

Nigella Lawson love heart cut-out cookies for Valentine’s Day

In Australia Valentine’s Day is just a minor blip on the calendar, not the huger than huge occasion it is in the US. Nonetheless it gives me a perfect excuse to dust off my heart-shaped cutters and to create something sweet. Continue reading

Donna Hay chocolate cookies with peppermint filling

7 Feb

pepperChoc1

I think I am in the minority when I say it should be a case of ‘never the twain shall meet’ with chocolate and peppermint. Followers of my blog will know that I don’t have a sweet tooth but that’s not the reason for my somewhat controversial belief. Continue reading

Summer in Sydney is just too hot. Balmy days. Hot nights with no drop in temperature. Cooking is just too hard and dinner is often salad or something equally refreshing.

While I won’t go near the stove for make a meal I will happily prepare something sweet. Continue reading

Rocky road brownie tart birthday cake

27 Jan

mainBrownie

It was my niece’s birthday and she had flown down from her home near the Queensland border to catch up with her fav cousins (misses 7 and 9) and her nana. Naturally a cake was in order but the biggest decision of the moment was the nature of the cake. As the niece is a self-confessed a sweet tooth (her mum made her a cake that used 2 kilos of icing sugar!) a chocolate cake was in order but that didn’t really help – have you SEEN how many recipes for chocolate cake lurk on the web?

The idea of rocky road crept into my mind… Continue reading

These are the cutest incarnations of lamingtons I ever did see! For non-Aussies, a lamington is a sponge cake coated in chocolate icing then drizzled in coconut. Super yum. Continue reading

Blueberry & polenta cupcakes

I am the sort of person who gets so excited when they see a new or unusual baking recipe that I will rush out to buy any ingredient that I don’t have in the cupboard. Usually by the time said ingredient is stored in the pantry I have a new ‘must bake’ recipe and that item that I simply had to have ends up languishing, unloved, in the back of the pantry.

Sometimes fate intervenes and the same ingredient pops up again and I dust off said item, preheat the oven and get cracking. Continue reading
