Are Oreos a hit in your house? They are at Casa Hungry with the under 12 set but the here adults find them sickly and bland. As they are often on sale in the supermarket I usually buy a few packets with the intention of adding them to baked goods, but usually find I am piped at the post by Misses 9 and 11 who love taking them to school.
This time I managed to successfully hide the packet in the pantry and while the kids were at school I got to thinking – what could I do with a packet of Oreos?
It may be hard to believe but Oreos are actually vegan. I’m not – vegan, that is – but I know it is important to some people. Having a vegan base ingredient inspired me to come up with a vegan cake recipe.
I have a colleague at work who is vegan. Like I have mentioned before, I take my baked goods to work every week and ask for a donation to MSF (Doctors Without Borders) in exchange for baked goods. Whenever I take vegan baked goods (ie I have usually run out eggs and am forced to be creative) Ms T is so excited. It is quite sweet, actually, and makes me want to create more vegan baked recipes as she usually misses out.
She reported that this cake was omg so good, as did Misses 9 and 11 (as did Miss 11`s BFF who happened to be here on baking day) so I am calling that a win.
The other great thing about this easy vegan chocolate cake recipe is that it uses just one bowl and no mixer.
GATHER:
1 ½ cups self-raising flour
½ cup sifted cocoa
¾ cup caster sugar
1 packet Oreos
1 cup room temperature water
¼ cup canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
1 ½ cups icing sugar, to serve
LET’S GET TO IT:
Preheat oven to 180C and grease and line a round 20cm cake pan with non-stick baking paper.
Grab 4 Oreos and cut into large chunks and set aside.
Place the rest of the Oreos inside a large plastic ziplock bag and hit with a rolling pin until crushed. I went for a mixture of bigger and smaller pieces.
Put all ingredients into a bowl – except Oreos and icing sugar – and mix with a silver spoon until combined.
Tip the Oreo crumbs – not including the 4 you cut – into the batter and stir until just combined.
Scrape batter into pan and bake for 25-30 minutes / until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Remove from oven and cool completely in tin before removing to a wire rack.
When cold make icing: sift icing sugar into a medium bowl then add just enough water to make a thick icing.
Drizzle over cake then sprinkle remaining 4 Oreos on top of cake.
Looks fabulous Mum. I now object to Oreos because Cadbury seems to have replaced Top Deck with Oreo chocolate bars. I miss my Top Deck.
Cheers! I have never been a fan of white chocolate – far too sweet. Miss 11 is a BIG fan though – she likes Top Deck too.
When Miss 11 follows your lead send me all the white chocolate 😃
Vegan desserts are a challenge for me so I’m appreciative of any recipe.
I used to be scared of vegan desserts but now I enjoy creating them. This cake is really easy – and yummy – hope you give it a try.
Wowee, can’t wait to try this one! I love Oreos – I always have big stashes from Costco 😍🍫
Thanks Tara! I let my Costco membership lapse… it is just too damn far away to make it worthwhile. I did love buying things in bulk though…
Looks quite similar to my vegan chocolate cake!
I haven’t seen your choc vegan cake, though I love your vanilla version – will have to check it out.
I did not know that Oreos were vegan! Love your way of collecting funds. I am going to share that idea with a friend.
Yes, it is quite weird to think that Oreos are vegan but they are! I love baking and I love MSF so this combines the best of both worlds 🙂
Is it true that Oreo cookies are vegan? I’ve heard that maybe they are not. Doesn’t matter either way to me tho I guess, this looks freakin AMAZING!
Yes, it totally is true! Who knew?! So strange to think that there is no dairy in there…
Oreos! Americas favorite cookie.. also vegan!
yes! How incredible that they are vegan 🙂
Love this recipe 😋🙂
Thank you 🙂
