This chocolate coffee cake screams ‘after dinner’. Not for the faint hearted, it contains a shock of coffee that will reinvigorate even the sleepiest dinner guest.
Mocha dessert cake is a simple recipe to throw together and uses just seven ingredients, including just one egg. As I bake most days I go through dozens of eggs and am always grateful to find a recipe that doesn’t use too many googs.
Make sure you use dark chocolate to get the rich lushness that everyone wants in a cake. It is moist and dark and everything you would want after finishing a lovely meal.
I found this recipe in a lovely book I borrowed from the library called ‘Cakes – a collection of the very best baked treats.’
This is a rich, dense dessert cake that is perfect without any frosting. I dusted mine with icing sugar using a stencil to create the word love. If you want to skip the icing sugar serve with a dollop of freshly whipped cream or ice cream.
GATHER:
100 grams dark chocolate, diced
150 grams butter, diced
¾ cup caster sugar
1 cup strong black coffee
1 cup plain flour
¼ cup cornflour
1 egg
LET’S GET TO IT:
Preheat oven to 160C and grease and line a 20cm round bakimg pan with non-stick baking paper.
Place chocolate, butter, sugar and coffee in a large saucepan and melt over a low heat, stirring, until mixture is smooth and combined.
Remove from heat and and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
Sift over flour and cornflour, then stir in egg using a big silver spoon.
Pour into tin, gently tap on bench to remove any air bubbles and bake for 47-57 minutes or until cake is firm.
Stand in tin for ten minutes before removing to wire rack to cool.
soo beautiful
awww, thanks so much 🙂
thank you too
A one egg cake Mrs H! Got to try this soon and I love the ‘love’. 🤗
Yes! We go through cartons and cartons of free range googs so a one-egg cake is a winner.
It’s so gorgeous! I bet it tastes just like how it looks ❤️
Cheers! It is such a rich and lush cake.
Now, this is something I’d like to enjoy today. I want to ask about the strong coffee, how strong it is? Or do you have like accurate measurement for the water and coffee??
I actually made a shot of espresso then topped it up with extra water so it was quite strong!
Hmm, I don’t always get lucky with the flavor when I mix water & coffee. It’s either I get it too strong or no coffee flavor at all.
This sounds perfect for us. We LOVE coffee and chocolate.
It combines two of the best things in life 🙂
Sounds delicious, and so pretty. 🙂
It sounds absolutely delicious, but I have found that coffee is my kryptonite, could make with decaf tho and still enjoy all the yummy flavours. Mmmm! 🙂
Yeah, try baking it with any kind of caffeinated beverage! Hope you love it.
What an unusual ingredient list I presume the “cup” of coffee is a 250ml cup and not an espresso? I’ll be trying this one.
I made an espresso shot then topped it up with hot water – the original called for instant coffee. This cake is lovely, I must say.
Yum! I love chocolate and coffee together… beautiful cake!
It was such a winner, I will have to bake it again very soon.
Gorgeous and delicious!
THANKA ANNA! Ooops, caps lock, sorry 🙂
Lol! 😀 You’re very welcome!!
This look so good! I love the way you stencilled the word love with icing sugar, so pretty. Just a quick question, in the method you said you sift the flour and the cornflour but I can’t see flour in the ingredient list. I may be reading this wrong but I thought I would check before I make it.
Thanks so much for sharing

Eek! Thanks for spotting the typo Julie! It is one cup of plain flour. Have fixed it now. Have a wonderful Wednesday 🙂
Love mocha dessert!
Hehe I think I’d need to eat this during the day or make it with decaf as I really do feel the effects of coffee!
I am almost immune to the magical ‘jolt’ quality of coffee these days #addict
Coffee really seems to enhance chocolate and your cake sounds good. I’m with Julie about the flour question, I’ll stop back by to see if it has been added as this is a cake I would enjoy making.
Silly me left it out of the ingredient list – you need one cup of plain flour. Thanks for being so eagle eyed!
I really appreciate your clarifying the flour question as you cake recipe is a nice one to have in my files. Thanks!
Thank you x
Now this cake would make a fitting end to a dinner party. Sometimes, even a little frosting/icing is too much. The powdered sugar atop your cake avoids the problem but still adds a little sweetness to every bite. As a decaf drinker, I could use a good jolt after serving dinner for a group. 🙂
I often find that the most perfect cake is ruined by the addition of miles of frosting. Less is more, as my mum always says 🙂
Recipe states “Sift over flour and cornflour” but there is no flour in the ingredients list? I want to make this cake for my hubbies birthday )
So sorry – have just fixed that. Should be one cup of plain flour. Thanks for pointing that out 🙂
I love strong coffee and love coffee desserts even more. This looks delicious and so simple to make! Will definitely be making this.
Then you will love this cake! Hope you get a chance to bake it on the weekend. Enjoy 🙂
