Growing up my dad worked for Nestle, which means we had a plethora of items to keep any sweet-tooth person happy. Of all the treats dad would bring home my favourite was always Milo, a malted milk product that we would ladle into mugs of milk, or eat straight from the jar.
Over the years there were various Milo products, including Milo chocolate bars. Oh, how I loved those bars! I believe the bars have been discontinued but the original Milo product is still going strong – and the tin gets quite a workout in my house.
To celebrate Australia Day I thought I would use Milo to make two easy desserts that are designed to be eaten together – although I won’t dob if you eat them apart.
Milo icecream is a tweak on the easy icecream recipe posted by the fabulous Not Quite Nigella (see it here: http://www.notquitenigella.com/2013/03/16/home-made-no-churn-blue-ribbon-vanilla-ice-cream/) while I found the Milo slice recipe at bestrecipes.com.au and tweaked it.
Milo icecream:
GATHER:
1/3 cup icing sugar, sifted
400mL thickened cream
Splash best vanilla
3 – 4 tablespoons Milo
LET’S GET TO IT:
Combine everything – except Milo – into bowl of electric mixer and beat using whisk attachment until soft peaks form.
Scrape into Tupperware with lid then use a metal spoon to stir through Milo.
Freeze overnight.
To serve, remove from freezer and allow to soften for 10 or so minutes.
Milo slice
GATHER:
1/2 cup self-raising flour
1/2 cup plain flour
1 cup rolled oats
2/3 cup shredded coconut
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup Milo
1 egg, whisked
135 g butter melted and slightly cooled
LET’S GET TO IT:
Line and grease a 20cm x 20cm cake tin and preheat oven to 180C.
In a large bowl whisk together the dry ingredients then beat in the egg and butter until just combined.
Press into tin and bake for 13-15 minutes.
Cool in pan before slicing into bars.
I really liked the Milo bars too. I also like to sprinkle Milo on vanilla ice cream.
How good were those bars?! Milo is my BFF.
I’d get off the bus and buy one from the local milk bar as I walked home.
Excellent Aussie Day fare – have a good one!
Thanks so much 🙂

I’ve also never had milo, but this looks wonderful. It makes me want to try some someday.
Milo is ten types of yum! It made our country great 😉
My father also worked for a company where he would come home with lots of goodies. At one stage he was offered a job with Red Tulip and we wanted him to take it because of all the chocolates we imagined he would bring home. But he didn’t take it – he took a job with a company selling cleaning products! xx
In a way my dad’s job almost turned me of chocolate as an adult: we used to eat so much choc, Quik, choc bits etc that now I only eat small amounts of dark chocolate. To do this day the mere thought of Milky Bars makes me want to be ill 😦 Bet your mum was happy when hubby started working for a cleaning company!
Happy Australia Day Hungry Mum – what a treat to celebrate with!
Cheers Laura – hope you have a fun and relaxin day tomorrow x
Not knowing what Milo was, I turned to Amazon and found it. Being the canister had a footballer (soccer player) on its label, I doubt if Milo is made here. Still, if it’s a chocolate product, I’m all for it. Both dishes sound like great ways to celebrate the holiday. I hope you’re enjoying the day.
Reblogged this on the hungry mum.
