I often bypass the sweeties aisle in the supermarket but recently I’ve noticed just how cheap chocolate bars are becoming. This isn’t a case of childhood nostalgia – growing up, my dad worked at Nestle so our house was always awash with chocolate – but a recent phenomenon.
On my last few supermarket outings there has been a glut of chocolate bars for 99 cents! Yes, even though we no longer have cent coins you can still buy chocolate for 99 cents.
When I saw Maltesers reduced I knew I couldn’t leave them there. I bought a couple of big boxes – admittedly for more than 99 cents – and knew I wanted to bake with them.
Get home, dump groceries on bench, hit Google for inspiration, fall in love with http://jessiecakesdiary.com. Do not visit this site if you are hungry or craving something sweet. This is a corner of the internet ruled by luscious bakes, all beautifully photographed.
Next time Malteasers are cheap, grab ‘em and bake ‘em into gooey, oozy brownies. You won’t regret it.
PS – Miss9 actually made these, isn’t she clever? #thatsMyGal I encouraged her to reduce the sugar from the original recipe and we reduced the cooking time to ensure super gooey brownies.
GATHER:
150g unsalted butter, diced
170g dark chocolate, cut into chunks
150g caster sugar
2 eggs
150g self-raising flour
150g Maltesers
LET’S GET TO IT:
Place dark chocolate and butter in ceramic bowl then place snugly over pan with just simmering water. Melt, stirring every so often until glossy and combined. Remove from heat and set aside.
Preheat oven to 180 and grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square cake tin.
In bowl of electric mixer beat sugar and eggs until foamy, then use a silver spoon to stir in the melted chocolate and flour. Add in three quarters if the Malteasers then scrape into pan. Place remaining Malteasers on top then use a knife to gently sink them partially down into the batter.
Bake for 13 minutes – you want them gooey!
Remove to cooling rack and when cold cut into squares.
I could eat a batch of this in one sitting. 🙂
That is a very real fear 🙂
I have seen those sales, the Mars Bars were mighty tempting. This looks fab and behooves the daughter of an ex chocolate company employee!! ☺️
Behooves! Gold star for slipping that fabulous word into the mix 🙂 I don’t have a sweet tooth but I always grab a Cherry Ripe when they are on sale – I have quite the stash now!
OMP! I need one… or a half of a dozen of these please. My pot-belly is empty. Snorts. XOXO – Bacon
Sorry Bacon – these babies are long gone!
oh snorts and stomps hooves. XOXO – Bacon
They all look delicious. It’s funny, I could actually feel my stomach expanding outwards as I scrolled down the page.
Thanks – you probably felt your teeth eroding too from all the sugar!
I’m making brownies right now! I literally just put them in the oven, I scroll through my feed whilst they’re baking 🙂

Same same but different?! I just pulled a different kind of brownies out of oven, too. I think I have a problem 😉
Could this be a better combo, how decadent and delicious! Might be a Sunday arvo treat 🙂
These look absolutely amazing! Oh how I miss maltesers so much – I might have to try and find a way to make this recipe with some homemade maltesers!
Do you have allergies? Is that why you miss Malteasers? I hope you can get a fix of something similar so you can make these brownies.
These with a nice cup of hot tea, … heaven
A good combo 🙂
your dad worked at nestle??? you lucky thing!
oh yeah. #ChubbyKid Still can’t eat white chocolate after gorging myself after touring a chocolate factory #EatAllTheMilkyBars
I’m going to the grocery store today, I will most definitely be buying some Maltesers now!
yay! Just be sure not to sample too many Maltesers as you baking these brownies, not that I’m speaking from experience or anything 😉
Okay, someone just created pure bliss in a brownie.
These are soooo good – watch ’em vanish in seconds!
