Gooey Malteser brownies The Hungry Mum

I often bypass the sweeties aisle in the supermarket but recently I’ve noticed just how cheap chocolate bars are becoming. This isn’t a case of childhood nostalgia – growing up, my dad worked at Nestle so our house was always awash with chocolate – but a recent phenomenon.

On my last few supermarket outings there has been a glut of chocolate bars for 99 cents! Yes, even though we no longer have cent coins you can still buy chocolate for 99 cents.

When I saw Maltesers reduced I knew I couldn’t leave them there. I bought a couple of big boxes – admittedly for more than 99 cents – and knew I wanted to bake with them.

Get home, dump groceries on bench, hit Google for inspiration, fall in love with http://jessiecakesdiary.com. Do not visit this site if you are hungry or craving something sweet. This is a corner of the internet ruled by luscious bakes, all beautifully photographed.

Next time Malteasers are cheap, grab ‘em and bake ‘em into gooey, oozy brownies. You won’t regret it.

The Hungry Mum

PS – Miss9 actually made these, isn’t she clever? #thatsMyGal I encouraged her to reduce the sugar from the original recipe and we reduced the cooking time to ensure super gooey brownies.

GATHER:

150g unsalted butter, diced
170g dark chocolate, cut into chunks
150g caster sugar
2 eggs
150g self-raising flour
150g Maltesers

LET’S GET TO IT:

Place dark chocolate and butter in ceramic bowl then place snugly over pan with just simmering water. Melt, stirring every so often until glossy and combined. Remove from heat and set aside.

Preheat oven to 180 and grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square cake tin.

In bowl of electric mixer beat sugar and eggs until foamy, then use a silver spoon to stir in the melted chocolate and flour. Add in three quarters if the Malteasers then scrape into pan. Place remaining Malteasers on top then use a knife to gently sink them partially down into the batter.

Bake for 13 minutes – you want them gooey!

Remove to cooling rack and when cold cut into squares.

Do you have allergies? Is that why you miss Malteasers? I hope you can get a fix of something similar so you can make these brownies.
