This fabulous baked custard tart was one of those recipes I stumbled across and just *knew* it would be in my baking future. It comes courtesy of the No Pinning Allowed blog, who named it Belgian Flan, a much more alluring name. If you want to see the original it is here: http://nopinningallowed.wordpress.com/2012/06/08/recipe-belgian-flan/
I saw it and made it immediately. It was consumed just as rapidly by The Hungry Dad, a man with a passion for custard. It is a matter of chucking everything into a bowl, mixing & baking – it couldn’t be easier.
By some baking magic it turns into a divine custard tart that can be sliced when cold. Or eaten directly from the flan tin you baked it in… Misses 4 & 6 helped make it and for such a simple recipe it packs a lovely sweet punch. I did reduce the amount of sugar slightly.
GATHER:
2 cups of milk
4 eggs
¾ cup caster sugar
1 cup self raising flour
splash vanilla extract
LET’S GET TO IT: Preheat oven to 170C. Whisk everything together in a bowl until combined. Pour into ceramic or glass pie tin. Bake for between 30-40 minutes depending on your oven. Cool on bench for ten minutes before placing in fridge to cool. Sprinkle with icing sugar to serve.
Sounds great, looks great!
Is great! [and did I mention oh so easy?]

Yum! Looks so easy, would be lovely with berries.
Good call – will try next that next time. I usually have some raspberries floating around in the freezer.

I love simple recipes – who has time for fussing over baking?
Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I love custard (when I go to the pub opposite my house for dinner, they’ll do me a bowl just of custard for pudding if I can’t have any of the others!) so a baked version sounds right up my street!
You have a pub opposite your house? Can I move in?
Baked custard is great for colder weather. Or warmer. Or anytime, really…
Oh something so easy that looks delicious. On my to bake list asap!
So, so, SO easy & yummy! You could make it during an ad break 🙂

Everyone loved it, as we all knew they would! Thanks for sharing! xxx
So glad to hear! I ended up making one yesterday afternoon, too. Suffice to say there is none left.
Knocked one up last night – let it set overnight and just tried a piece with my morning coffee – superb! Will make sure I have icing sugar in the house for the next attempt, but nutmeg is a not-too-shabby substitute…the Hungry Keith loved it too!
Love, love, love custard. Can’t wait to make this – seems so easy!
This is the easiet thing you will *ever* make. Really – it is super simple.

From you that is the ultimate compliment, CCU! Thanks!
Hello,
I am not sure how I stumbled across your blog but pleased I did. My husband adores custard so simply had to make this….and he loved it. My only query is when do you know it is cooked? Do you leave it jiggly in the centre like most custards and let it firm up as it cools? I think the one I made was overcooked as to me it seemed a bit rubbery.
I hope you can help…and I can’t wait to try some of your other recipes. Can you suggest some other ones like this absolute winner?
Regards,
Angela from Brisbane
I’m so glad you did stumble across my blog! I take custard out when it does have a slight jiggle – is hard to be scientific about ‘how much’ of a joggle, but you don’t want it to be super liquid-y, if that makes sense. You might like to try my ‘easy & impressive chocolate mousse’ – my hubby also adores custard & he LOVED this mousse. Loved. Thanks for popping by x
My husband loves custard too! This looks like a great recipe to have in the repertoire 🙂
Really, I don’t know how I managed so long without it, it gets used so often.
