Hot buttered rum for one - the perfect pick-me-up when you have a cold (or are just really cold). www.thehungrymum.com.png

hot buttered rum for one - The Hungry Mum

I have been struck by a cold that is determined to get the better of me. I have been bedridden and feeling very sorry for myself for what seems like an eternity. Woe is me 😉

It isn’t all bad news though – my family has been taking very good care of me. The Hungry Dad has literally gone from one end of Sydney to the other today, catering to my every need. Needs today have included cinnamon scrolls from the best place in Sydney (Hello, Oregano Bakery) to sourdough bread and litres and litres of juice.

Miss 8 made me a patient’s tray complete with a get well card, while Miss 10 has just been quietly helping in the background.

My friend Merryn brought me soup and home-made garlic bread for dinner last night, which was so delicious and so thoughtful.

I have gotten off my death bed – hyperbole alert – to share with you the hot drink that has been helping my through this awful cold.

I first tried hot buttered rum in Canada, when we went to Whistler over Christmas. What a revelation! Warming, sweet and strong, it was the perfect drink to warm us up on Christmas Eve with The Hungry Dad’s cousin and family as we watched the kids ice skate. Considering Christmas in Sydney is steamy and hot and the drink of choice is beer or champagne this was a lovely change.

This hot buttered rum may not kill your cold but it will warm you up and help you sleep. And that is sometimes the best thing you can ask for.

GATHER:

One nip of dark spiced rum – I used Kraken

2 teaspoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon butter, melted

boiling water

LET’S GET TO IT:

Add the sugar and rum to a mug and stir. Add in the melted butter and top the mug up with boiling water, stirring until combined.

Sip slowly.

Thanks 😉 Isn’t it an amazing drink? Kraken is a very dark, spiced rum. I never used to like rum but this is a winer.
