Growing up in Australia we kids were made aware of Oreos due to the fact that every sitcom on TV here was American. In these shows kids come from school, drank milk and had an Oreo. They attained mythical status even though we had just a vague idea of what kind of biscuit, or cookie, they were.
Then, a year or so ago, supermarkets were awash with Oreos. And they were so cheap. I bought them, I tried, them, I was underwhelmed. Never fear, thought I, for they can be turned into a swoon-worthy treat – the Oreo cupcake.
I came across the recipe on Bakerella’s uber-fab site and skipped off to the kitchen to make her cookies & cream cupcakes. They were so easy and such a hit that I’ve made them a few times now, always to rave reviews. I just reduced the sugar by a smidge.
My abhorrence to making and eating frosting means I didn’t I didn’t attempt Bakerella’s gorgeous looking icing. Instead I spread mine with a layer of dark chocolate ganache and then crowned each cupcake with some smashed up Oreos.
Oh, yeah.
GATHER:
24 Oreos
1 1/2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup caster sugar
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
3/4 cup milk
3/4 cup hot water
extra Oreos to decorate if desired
chocolate ganache to decorate if desired: In a small saucepan over low heat melt 125g dark chocolate [broken into chunks] with 1/2 cup cream. Stir until melted, thick and glossy. Allow to stand 15 minutes until thick. Use knife to spread over cakes.
LET’S GET TO IT:
Line two cupcake pans with liners and place a whole Oreo in each liner, then preheat oven to 180C.
In a large bowl whisk together the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda, baking powder.
Add eggs, oil, vanilla and milk and mix with spoon until combined, then add the hot water and mix until combined.
Using a ladle (this is a very wet batter) fill each liner until almost full.
Bake 16-18 minutes.
When totally cold top with chocolate ganache and crumble remaining Oreos on top.
Very yummy !!
Thanks! They are delish 🙂
That chocolate ganache ought to come with the Surgeon General’s warning. Deadly droolsome!
Oreos are famously ultra sweet; can’t imagine having a buttercream icing on top of that! Ganache is absolutely the right way to go (and, I’m rubbish with buttercream anyway haha).
Buttercream! Pah – who can be bothered? I’m sure my swirls of frosting *could* look incredible, if I spent hours and weeks and years working at it…
Hurray for ganache 🙂
I hear you 🙂
(Where’s the Like button, heh heh)
Wow, this is such a wonderful bake! It’s brilliant! =)
Cheers! Pretty easy to eat 🙂
Funny thing is that TimTams are now finally available in North America – or at least in Canada. We can buy the standard ones, PLUS the caramel ones and even the double-coated (my favourite). It’s like a global excessively sweet chocolate biscuit exchange!
Oh, that’s good! Am glad others can experience the bliss that are Tim Tams!
Can’t wait to make (and eat) this one! : )
They’re pretty delish!
oh my Lord, I am on a health kick at the moment but the great thing about it is that occasionally I’m allowed a treat and these cupcakes look awesome!! I know a number of people who would be drooling over these 😉
Stay on your health kick! I know how hard it is to stay healthy. Just look at the pictures 🙂
Like you, I was underwhelmed by them too… When you compare them to Tim Tams; well…!
However, you seem to have done the trick with this recipe…
Sounds very yummy… 😉
I shall, however; just keep looking at those pics; and pretend like heck..!
Oh yes, Tim Tams are the king of all bickies and Oreos are just a pale imitation!
They look sooo delicious!! OMG!
*drool
I love love love OREOS, but I try to not eat them, because if I have one, I’ll end up having the whole pack!!
These cakes are super delish. I’m like you, except with brie: I just eat & eat til it is all gone 😦
Gah!! *falls off WeightWatchers wagon* They look delicious!
They’re worth takin’ a tumble for 🙂
I need to try this!
Yes, you do! I recommend making them for someone else & only keeping one as they are v easy to eat…
That looks amazing, as much as I detest Oreos. I know what you mean by being underwhelmed; I make my own homemade Oreos and they are SO awesome. Remind me to blog my recipe one day.
I bet your kids adore these, though!
Yes, the kids adore them – they think it is quite magical having a cupcake with a sneaky bickie in the bottom!
And consider this a reminder RE blogging your homemade Oreos! They sound amazing!
I love the look of these! 😀
No such thing as too much chocolate, eh?!
I LOVE Oreos… so much so that I try not to keep them in the house 😉 These look absolutely decadent… so full of chocolate!
If you need a sugar hit these babies are your friend 🙂
This looks so good! Love Oreos and cupcakes : )
They go together ever so well 🙂
I remember a time when we had to travel to the USA to buy anything like Oreos. I think it’s a shame that everything is so available these days meaning when you do travel, you’re only seeing the same things you see on the shelves at home. I do like the look of your cupcakes though and I think they would be very special smothered in ganache xx
Very true – the world does seem to be getting ever smaller these days. And I think you should try the cakes – you won’t regret it!
Ohhh these look super yummy and I love Oreos 🙂 But i think i like Oreo flavoured desserts and cakes such as these delicious cupcakes more than having an Oreo by itself hehe 😀
Indeed – you get more bang for your buck when there’s an Oreo lurking in your cupcake 🙂
hahaha totally agree with you 🙂 i think I’m gonna have to dig up some Oreos I have in my pantry and make some cupcakes soon!
I too was hit with the underwhelming taste that is oreos. I do have to say though, I love the new confetti ones!
Oooh, I haven’t tried them! But I’m a sucker for confetti food 🙂
Love Bakerella!! I’ll have to try those!
She’s so fab – have no idea where she comes up with all of her delish creations.
The ponytails are going to love you dearly, as I a m making these for sure. I can’t believe that Oreos have only been available for a year there. I think they are more of a thrill in childhood but your cupcakes speak to all ages!
hehehe! My girls know that when I buy these bickies they are going to get baked! Let me know how you go with them 🙂
Ooo, cookies & cream! I have a confession, I actually like Oreos but only every once in a while, funnily enough (only with milk too!) the chocolate ganache is perfect, I like frosting but much prefer a smooth shiny layer of chocolate as you have here, delish!
I think drinking milk with an Oreo may actually be a legal requirement 🙂
I may or may not eat choc ganache straight from the container.
I remember an Oreo commerical from ages ago…”first you twist it, then you lick it, then you dunk it”. These cupcakes look delicious!
Me too! I still think Oreos benefit by being snuggled into the bottom of a cupcake 🙂
Definitely!
These sound seriously good and that icing looks so thick and shiny!
When it comes to ganache my theory is the thicker the layer, the better!
oooooo these look amazing…… i can’t think of a better combination!! 🙂
Thanks! This cupcake is happiness in a cake liner 🙂
Delicious idea! I love everything chocolate, even the disappointing oreos. I have come across recipes that are a gourmet take on the oreo cookie but I only look at them, since making them would require me eating them. 😛
Thanks! You just can’t go wrong with chocolate in any form, as far as I’m concerned 🙂
Awwwwwwww hell on earth……………………………
Heaven is a choc cupcake 🙂
Same here: never understood the fuss about Oreos. About the frosting, again, I agree with you: nothing beats ganache for me! 🙂
Good to see there’s another reasonable person on the planet RE Oreos 🙂
Reblogged this on the hungry mum.
I am with you: TV watching had led me to build up Oreos to mythical status and then I ate one and felt deflated. I felt the same way the first time I tried a Girl Scout cookie. My kids, however, love Oreos and they are permanently on some sort of deal so they are the cookie I buy most often for my little munchers. I don’t tend to eat them myself. I recently used Oreos in the making of a gooey, rich, chocolately dessert. I will need to try this recipe next.
I am so with you on Oreo cookies. My brother could eat an entire bag, if Mom let him, and I didn’t want a one. Still don’t. On the other hand, I love a good chocolate cupcake with a rich chocolate ganache frosting. Why mess it up with one of those cookies? 🙂
Im TOTALLY into Oreo, Im an Oreo-aholic and proud baby, so I reckon I will dig this beauty, especially with a giant glass of milk. Sounds like a dangerous eat, but dang I want to eat it. Mmmm.
